The Gift of Time

A friend of mine started blogging recently, and it reminded of this - my barely alive blog. I do love to write (which is pretty much the only thing that my very first blog post said), but I always operate under the assumption that I don’t have the time. Then, my friend started blogging. A friend who I always thought had even lesser free time than I did! She is a dancer, a writer, an actor, a producer, a director, a fashionista, a social butterfly, and has a full time job as a Product Manager at Amazon! Phew! And, now she has started blogging too! (Check out what the fabulous Nambster has to say here!)
I thought to myself if she can make time to do the things that she enjoys doing, why can't I?
I can not even begin to count how many times I complain that I don’t have time do this, or time to do that. I am almost a 100% sure that at least once a day I indulge in some form of self-pity, thinking “man, if only I had time to..
This isn’t to say that I don’t find time to do things that I enjoy. I absolutely do!! It's not all bad! But, I also do know that I waste a lot of time. Because, I get lazy. Or, because I feel I don’t have enough free time at a stretch to accomplish what I want to. Or, because it is easier to get home, crash on the couch, and watch The Office (for the hundredth time!) till it's time for dinner.
So, I have given myself something - the gift of time!
I am going to find every pocket of time that I can to do the things that I love - write, shoot, edit, cook, etc. etc. I’ll find time on the commute back home. I’ll find time in the evenings and on the weekends. I’ll make time to do these things that I love to do, instead of ignoring them!
It started yesterday. The motivating factor being - I had bananas that were overripe. And, I knew if I didn’t do something right away, I’d have to throw them out. So, I made banana bread. It turned out pretty decent too (as seen in the picture :P) I whisked away between taking bites of my dinner. And, I had to wait about 20 extra minutes for it to cool down before I could go to bed. But, I realized that it didn’t take a lot of extra time to do that one thing that I always wanted to try - baking banana bread!
Look at today, with this post. I started it on the bus back from work, and have spent another 20 mins on it now after getting home.
I can do this!! And, so can you! Let’s find time to make things that we like happen!
Because wasted pockets of time add up to wasted days, wasted weeks and wasted months. When I am all old and grey, and actually can't physically get off the couch, I don't want to be thinking, “man, if only I had time…
